Saxon 5 - 3 Cornerflag

NFA Sunday Trophy Round 3

After being unbeaten in November the team were looking in good shape to maintain their form with the return of key players. This game saw second in the league Saxon take on the leaders, for a place in the Quarter Finals.

A delayed kick off due to an accident on the A45 meant Saxon were kept waiting on a wet and cold morning. This was not an ideal start and neither was the first 10 minutes when the away team took the lead with a sweeping move.

The pitch was wet and muddy and it took time before the Saxon lads were comfortable. With some determination the scores were level from a strong finish by Glennadinho.

The tables turned for a while with Saxon providing questions for the visitors to answer however, it was Cornerflag who were gifted a goal when Aidy let the conditions get the better of him, the ball slipped out of his hands into the path of their striker who slotted home.

Saxon have matured this season and it showed when the Egg levelled the scores from a corner. Saxon were playing some good stuff, little Swaney showed spirit up front on his own and Glenn was battling hard in midfield.

A free-kick was awarded to Saxon on the edge of the area and a yellow card for the foul on Glenn to their player. Fatbregas stepped up to take it for the second time (player intruding 10 yards first time) a fabulous shot hit the underside of the bar and off the keeper for good measure to put Saxon 3-2 up.

We were looking good until 5 minutes before half time when Aidy rushed out of goal leaving himself stranded. Their player coolly finished in the open net.

After half time Saxon looked inspired, realising they had the quarter in their sights and were showing much better play than the opposition. They set about Cornerflag without mercy.

Matt Judge was an inspired substitute and with his first touch scored from a Swaney cross……usual story the linesman flagged for offside!! This just infuriated our boys and soon the goal came again from Matt.

Saxon were all over the visitors and Smithy could have scored a hat-trick during his brief appearance however it was Matt Judge who scored a header direct from a corner to put the game out of reach for Cornerflag.

The Egg hit the post in the last few minutes. The final score could have been easily more but we’ll certainly take what we got. Well done lads.

Man of the Match – Glennadinho
Goals – Gorton, Glenn, Wardy, Mat Judge (2)
