7th October 2007Saxon 3 - 0 RailwayBack to league competition this week and a chance to add to our impressive points tally so far. Today's game was an opportunity to show the development at Saxon this year. Railway won this fixture last season but they were in for a tough time today. Saxon started well and within 5 minutes took the lead through a finely finished Matt Judge goal. Soon after Liam Swane hit the post and then forced the keeper to make a great save. The lads were well on top but had to stay alert as the long punt up-field was giving some openings for the opposition. Joe Judge forced an attack and when the keeper came off his line the ball fell for Liam, who hit it over the empty goal. Dave Walford was slotted in for a one on one with the keeper but a tame effort was easy for the goalie. The early stages of the second half frustrated Saxon, openings were being created by Railway. Liam and Dave were being kicked about by the opposition defense and many balls were easily cleared in the air. Saxon started to get on top in the game but couldn't see a way of scoring especially as their keeper was showing inspiring form to deny Saxon. Adam brought on Dan Harding for Dave up front. This added some urgency to the attacks when almost immediately Dan created for a goal scoring opportunity. The double substitution of Matt Brown and Chris Smith saw Simon Gorton pushed up front to combat their big defender. Inspirationally, Simon forced Saxons' second goal within minutes of the change. From the retake Saxon showed their inexperience and were stunned by a well finished goal for the opposition. This may have spurred Saxon on as the last 10 minutes was one-way traffic. Possesion paid dividends when Matt Judge stuck a leg out from a Dave Ward shot to see the ball roll into the bottom corner. Many Saxon players will be kicking themselves due to missed chances but most of all Little Matty Judge saw his hat-trick disappear when he shot over the cross-bar with an open goal beckoning. A very nice result but could have been better. Man of Match - Stu Horton |
